Place to Start, 2010
At one point or another everyone struggles to find their path or place in life. Simply finding a way to change my path and start a new one has been an obstacle. As humans, we have become registered to make plans and lists, while basically mapping out our lives. Through these steps, some of us tend to lose ourselves and forget where we even started in the journey.
In my series, Place to Start, I explore these ideas through color, texture and line, while incorporating maps into my paintings. Maps are set plans of where we walk, travel and take routes. Even though maps refer to real space they do no project illusory space. As a result, it looks as though we could just wander around in them and never collide into anything. One could meditate or dream in this world where gravity seems to not exist.
By taking the function of maps out of context I have used their lines and patterns as an element in the midst of my paintings. By creating my own space and maps through blending colors and developing rich, textured surfaces I have ultimately found a place to start my new route in life.
